HP Stream 11 Released

HP Stream 11

HP just released a laptop for $199.99. Meet the HP Stream 11. At $199.99 this laptop isn’t going to offer you a lot of thrills, but it is no dud either. The HP Stream 11 comes with a one year subscription to Office 365 (worth $69.99) and a $25 dollar gift card to the Window’s Store.

This laptop is not for everybody. However, it is worth considering for those who want a cheap functional laptop for your kids, a laptop to supplement your tablet or phone, or just an affordable laptop to pull out occasionally. You can use the below link to review and purchase on Amazon.

New iPads

Apple updated its iPads last week. Here is what is new in four sentences.

The new iPad Air 2 is now even thinner. Apparently Apple believes we want to be able to shave with our iPads. It has a faster processor, an 8 megapixel camera, a screen with less glare, and a Touch ID (fingerprint reader). The iPad Mini 3’s only upgrade was a Touch ID and a gold case option.

If you don’t own the original iPad Air, you can now pick one up for the reduced price of $399. This is still a great product and is attractively priced.

iOS 8.1 To Be Released October 20

Good news for iPhone and iPad users. Apple announced today it was going to release iOS 8.1 on Monday (10/20/2014). Several people, my wife included, have experienced performance issues and odd behavior in the recently released iOS 8. iOS 8.1 is primarily aimed at fixing those issues. If you own an iPhone 4s or newer, an iPad 2 or newer, or any iPad Mini, you will be able to update to iOS 8.1. You may plan on waiting until Wednesday next week to upgrade so that any initial release issues will be avoided.

New iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Most of my readers aren’t interested in digesting the “techy” details on the new iPhones announced today. For the iPhone user that is more interested in the user experience than the technology here are a few thoughts:

The new iPhone 6 has a larger 4.7 inch screen than the iPhone 5s which has a 4 inch screen. This is a much needed update since the iPhone seems a little small compared to it’s modern Android equivalents. Still need more screen real estate? You may consider the iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5 inch screen. Need even more? Consider an iPad Mini.

The new iPhones are more efficient with power this means longer battery life. The camera is very similar to the camera found on the iPhone 5s. However, there is a uptick in performance when it comes to recording videos.

A new payment service called Apple Pay will be available with the next iOS version. Within a year, expect to see a lot of vendors accepting payments just by tapping your iPhone on an equipped card reader. Expect Apple Pay within several apps even sooner.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus can be preordered starting September 12 and becomes available on September 19.
